Three things you need to be doing to be more body positive

It’s a struggle everyone faces. The battle between trying to be ‘good enough’ and thinking we aren’t. What we need to realise is that everyone is different, everyone is beautiful and just because you are being negative to yourself doesn’t mean others are thinking the same thing! We look at models and Instagrammers, we see the Victoria Secret fashion show and think that’s the norm, we are constantly trying to be a better version of ourselves, but let's be real, nothing has to change except our state of mind.

1. Don’t compare yourself to others

We have all done it at some point in our lives, we compare ourselves to each other. When we do this, we are cementing in our minds that we aren’t as good as someone else. By doing this our self esteem goes down, and the negative thoughts go up.

It’s a hard ask, but if you stop comparing yourself and start appreciating yourself as you are, you’re guaranteed to start feeling better! Accept your body for what it is! You may not be your ‘goal weight’ or exactly what you aspire to be, but why does that matter?

Following on with body positivity, it's important to touch on the opinions that are formed about being 'sexy'. Feeling sexy is viewed as shameful and can be looked down on. Emily Ratajkowski talks about the different issues relating to this in this Lenny Letter and it is a must read!

"To me, “sexy” is a kind of beauty, a kind of self-expression, one that is to be celebrated, one that is wonderfully female." - Emily Ratajkowski

2. Check out these great influencers on Instagram

Normalising the different aspects of a woman's body, otherwise condoned and hidden by the media, allows us to realise that the standards the media sets are only achieved through photoshop and false advertising.

These great women on Instagram are fighting the ideals that are set for woman and are showing off who they are and what they stand for in an inspirational way!

3. Shift your focus

Changing the thoughts you have about yourself and turning them into body positive actions and feelings is key to shifting your focus. A great way to begin the process is by skipping the part where you look in the mirror and pick out the things you dislike about yourself, but instead picking three things that you love. This simple task will re-program your mind to think of yourself in a different way and make a shift from negative to positive!

Try not to pick at the things you don't like about your body because you, just as you are, are perfect! Don't change because of the media's expectations. Stay true to yourself and jump on the body positive train, you won't regret it!
